5 Ways to Engage Students in Phonics Instruction

Teachers often tell me they think Phonics is boring. So I came up with 5 ways to teach phonics in first grade and make it fun and engaging. My students absolutely loved these lessons!

Dress up like a pirate for R controlled Vowels

Magic Hat and Wand for Magic E – put short vowel words in a hat and pull out the same word changed with Magic E.
And then our anchor chart that went with it.

Wear Cat Ears to teach about copycat letters and sounds.
These are letters like Y when it says /ie/ or /ee/ or even soft c and g.
Wrap yourself in bandages for OW, OU words. Or write ow and ou on bandaids and give each student one to use to create an anchor chart of words.

Sing Songs and Chants
For short vowels, we do a chant for each one. It’s the same chant it’s just changing the vowel.
Then we sing a song as well to just review the 5 short vowel sounds.
I hope this has given you some ideas for teaching phonics in first grade.
