What is a scope and sequence?

A scope and sequence is simply an outline of the skills that will be taught in a phonics program. As well as the order in which they will be taught. It’s important to have a scope and sequence because it ensures that all students receive direct, explicit instruction in phonics skills in a way that builds on what they have already learned.

Why is a phonics scope and sequence important?

There are several reasons why a phonics scope and sequence is important.

First, it ensures that students are taught all of the phonics skills they need to know in order to be successful readers.

Second, it provides a clear plan for teachers so they can teach phonics skills in an orderly and logical way.

Third, it allows teachers to track student progress and identify areas of need.

Finally, it provides a way for parents to see what phonics skills their child is expected to learn. As well as when they are expected to learn them.

What is the best order to teach phonics skills?

The order in which phonics skills are taught is important because it ensures that students learn phonics skills in a way that makes sense to them. There are many phonics skills that students need to learn in order to be successful readers. But aside from a few skills, the order doesn’t matter. As long as you are building from more basic concepts to more complex; order isn’t crucial. You should also break down difficult concepts into smaller more manageable skills.

As you can see, having a K-2 phonics scope and sequence is an important part of any phonics program.
